Matthew Johnson
Matthew Johnson was born in London, UK. He is the son of the well-known and respected abstract artist Michael Johnson. From 1982-4 he studied for a Higher Art Certificate at the National School of Art in East Sydney.
The abstractionist held his first solo exhibition at the Christine Abrahams Gallery in Melbourne in 1989. Johnson has exhibited extensively throughout Europe and Australia and completed a three month Australia Council Residency in Barcelona.
Johnson has a passion for traditional Japanese methods of mixing rare pigments. His richly pigmented canvasses reflect his love of applying and layering paint. His works explore the subtleties and complexities of the play of light in nature.
His work is featured in notable collections, including KPMG, Sydney, Robert Holmes a Court Collection, Perth, Smorgan Family Collection, Melbourne, and the State Bank, Victoria, and in private collections in Australia, Cologne, Munich, New York, Toronto and Vancouver.
