John Olsen
John Olsen was born in Newcastle, NSW in 1928 and is considered as one of the most important living Australian artists.
He studied art at the Julian Ashton School as well as the Urban School, Paris from 1957 - 60. He gained his first official success in Melbourne in 1956, when a small painting was purchased by the National Gallery of Victoria from the Herald Outdoor Art School.
In 1970 he was commissioned to paint the Sydney Opera House mural " Salute to Five Bells ". In 1978 he became a trustee of the Art Gallery of NSW and both as an artist and administrator has continued to exert great influence on art affairs of NSW.
He has won the Wynne Prize twice in 1969 and 1985. His work is represented in all Australian state gallery collections, the National Gallery of Australia and regional galleries throughout Australia. He is also represented in institutional, corporate and private collections in Australia, Asia, the UK, Europe and the USA.
