Gloria Petyarre
Not unlike other important Aboriginal artists from the Utopia region, Gloria Petyarre's creative development was not encumbered by or steeped in Western traditions and conventions. Her region's dreamtime stories facillitated her paintings to convey her peoples' affinity with the land.
In 1999 her place in the artworld was cemented when she was awarded the prestigious Wynne Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW. Throughout the 1990's her paintings were included in many important group exhibitions in Australia and the USA.
Her paintings are represented in the permanent collection of the National Gallery of Australia, Canberra, the Art Gallery of NSW, the Art Gallery of South Australia, the National Gallery of Queensland, and the Levi Collection, Seattle, USA.
