Geoff Dyer was born in Hobart, Tasmania. He studied art at the Tasmanian School of Art. He has been exhibiting in solo and group exhibitions nationally and internationally since 1970.
In 1995 he received an Art Gallery of New South Wales Work/Study Scholarship for Cite Paris, France. In 2003 he was awarded the prestigious Archibald Prize
at the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney for his portrait of Richard Flannagan.
His work is represented in many public, corporate and private collections in Australia, England, Europe, America and Asia Pacific including, University of Tasmania, Queen Victoria Museum and art Gallery, Launceston, Art Bank, Qantas National Collection, Reserve Bank of Australia, Price Waterhouse Coopers, Crown Casino, Melbourne, the Sheridan Hotel Group and the Art Trust and the Prime Life Corporation Ltd.
Dyer's art is infused by the power and majesty of the natural world. Over the past decades he has taken in locations from the west coast through to the rugged islands of the Bass Straits, and the dense timbers of the Franklin River. In recent years, his work has become increasingly abstract. Dyer's ability to extract beauty within a seemingly barren and arid landscape bears testimony to his artistic talent.
