Carlos Barrios
Carlos Barrios was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, South America. His early childhood was filled with visits to magical ancient places, pyramids and temples, icons that can still be found in his art. His father was a collector of art and artefacts and Carlos started drawing and painting from an early age. Civil war broke out when he was ten bringing hardships to families in El Salvador. As a consequence his family immigrated to Australia.
Carlos studied at the National Art School, but fearing the loss of his style he gave up his formal studies. He has been the subject of many solo and group shows from 1992 onwards and is also well-known for his painting in situ.
His work can be found in collections in Australia, South Africa and Central America.
He was a finalist for the Sulman Prize at the Art Gallery of NSW in 2005 and 2006 and also a finalist for the Blake Prize in 2007.
