Carlos Barrios

Carlos Barrios was born in San Salvador, El Salvador, Central America. His childhood was filled with visits to magical ancient places, pyramids and temples, icons that can still be seen in his art. His father was a collector of art and artefacts and Carlos started drawing and painting from an early age. Civli war broke out when he was only ten, bringing hardship to families living in El Salvador. As a consequence Carlos immigrated with his family to Australia.

He studied at the National Art School, but fearing for a loss of his own style, he gave up formal studies. He has been the subject of many solo and group shows dating back to 1992, and is also well known for doing paintings in situ. His work is in collections in Australia, South Africa and Cental America.

He was chosen as a finalist for the prestigeous Sulman Prize in 2005 and 2006, and also was a finalist in the Blake Prize in 2007.
