Andy Warhol

Andy Warhol was born in Forest City, Pennsylvania, USA in 1928. He graduated from the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1949. He moved to New York and drew advertising for various magazines including Vogue and Harper's Bazaar. He started illustrating books and designing sets for theatres. He published several books and  in 1956 he was included in his first group show " Recent Drawings in USA " held at the Museum of Modern Art.

He began receiving accolades for his work, with the 35th Annual Art Directors Club award for Distinctive Merit for a shoe advertisement. In 1960 he made his first paintings based on comic strips like Dick Tracy, Popeye and Superman and two of Coca-Cola bottles. In 1962, he painted dollar bills and Campbell soup cans, and his work was included in an important exhibition of pop art at the Sidney Jarvis Gallery in New York. In the summer of 1965 he met Paul Morisssey, who became his collaborator and adviser.

His first solo museum exhibition was held at the Institute of Contemporary Art at the University of Pennsylvania. In the 1960's he produced a few underground films. During the 1960's and 1970's his status as a media icon skyrocketed. He began the publishing of Interview Magazine in 1969, which displayed a new view of journalism. He is considered the Father of Pop with his silk-screened pictures of Campbell's soup cans and images of Marilyn Monroe and Mao and other celebrities. He was well known for his wild parties and the encouragement he gave to younger artists. He died in 1987 aged 58.
